Q and A

Q: Do I need to be a club member or hold a racing license?
A: Yes, all of the MTBSX events will be held on USABMX tracks. In order to ride on a USABMX track, you must have an active USABMX license. Riders may purchase an annual license (recommended) or a special one-time-only, one-day license for this event.

Q: Why are we partnering with USABMX?
A: We are partnering with USABMX because each track is a ready-made facility designed for the needs that we are looking for: a structured, controlled, consistent environment. Plus, being in the sport of BMX, we have relationships with many track operators that bring their experience to the table. Bringing new riders to the tracks is also good for the tracks. For the rider a huge benefit to having a USABMX license is that you have access to 16 tracks in Florida and hundreds around the country, just paying the local practice fee.

Q: Do I need to qualify in order to race?
A: No, there is no qualifying required at MTBSX events, even in series events.

Q: What class should I race in?
A: We are in uncharted waters here. So we are falling back to the classes that have been widely accepted in the MTB racing world. They can be found here. If the classes need to be adjusted, we will do so to make it a better program for our competitors.

Q: What style bicycle is allowed?
A: Any bicycle that is 26”, 27.5”, 29” or 700c; no E-Bikes or fixed gear!

Q: What apparel do I need to wear?
A: As per USABMX regulations:

• All riders must wear helmets with permanent strap attached; snaps are not allowed. Helmets must have sufficient padding and be of good quality. The sanction highly recommends a full face helmet or a helmet that covers the ears.

• A helmet shall not be modified to restrict the field of vision for the rider.

• All riders must wear enclosed shoes, which cover all toes, and are sufficient to protect the riders feet.

• It is recommended that all riders wear long pants. Loose fitting short pants made of tear resistant material are permitted when used in combination with knee/shin pads. All combinations of knee/shin pads are subject to approval of the Sanction and or Track Operator.

• It is recommended that riders wear long sleeve shirts. Short sleeve shirts and sufficient elbow protection is allowable subject to the approval of the Sanction and or Track Operator.

Q: How difficult are the courses?
A: BMX tracks have their own style and layout. While tracks share similar obstacles, they seldom follow the same order. Some tracks require a higher skill level to clear more difficult obstacles.

Q: What is the competition format?
A: Classes with over 20 riders will be split into two groups. Each group will race a 3-lap qualifier with the top 5 riders advancing to the Final. All remaining riders will race a 3-lap Last Chance Qualifier or LCQ, with the top 10 riders advancing into the Final. Each class final will be a different amount of laps in duration. The first rider crossing the finish line on the final lap will be the winner. Please see below.

Expert - 3 lap qualifier, 3 lap LCQ, and a 15 lap main
Sport - 3 lap qualifier, 3 lap LCQ, and a 10 lap main
Novice - 3 lap qualifier, 3 lap LCQ, and a 5 lap main

MTBSX will also be using the standard officiating flags used in circuit racing. For a complete list of the flags and their meaning click here.

Q: How can I get more information?
A: As we get closer to the event we will be putting updates on our website, www.mtbsx.com, as well as social media (Instagram and Facebook). You can also email us at info@mtbsx.com. We are hoping to have a full series in the Fall of 2021. All information will be on our website.

Q: How can I enter the MTBSX?
A: For this first event, you can get your USABMX license on-line (link here, recommended) or register for your license the morning of the event. However, you can also get a USABMX license at any USABMX track. Then the morning of the event, you will only have to register for the event itself. Please allow sufficient time the morning of the event, arrive early!

Q: When should I move up to another class?
A: Again, uncharted waters for this discipline. We can say that if there is a clear violation of classification, we will address it. This is meant to be a fun, exciting type of racing. Winning by two straights is only a feat in Sport class. Please bring your good sportsmanship.

Q: What is the refund or credit policy?
A: In the event of cancellation due to weather, we will have a rain date soon after.
